There is a story about a man who developed the perfect solution when it came to dishwashing detergent. The story is from the 1960s or so; electronic dishwashers were available but not yet widespread. Many people still did their dishwashing in the kitchen sink, complete with a slightly corrosive solution and lots of scrubbing. Cleaning up from a big meal could take literally hours, and lots of hard work.
The story (and it is a true one) is that this inventor hit upon a solution that not only left dishes totally clean, but did so without the hours of scrubbing necessary with the commercial brands. It was about as close to a dip and clean as anyone has ever gotten and seemed to work even on the toughest food. The man was excited and went to a company, who picked up this miracle product. The product was mass-produced and sold in grocery stores, but despite its affordability and the fact that it worked just as it claimed, it never did well, never making the inventor a rich man with multiple precious metal funds and was eventually discontinued.
Why did this happen? Well, the answer is simple if a bit ludicrous. The solution did not cause a reaction in water that created bubbles, which most people living in the average Erin Mills real estate had apparently come to associate with cleanliness. When the people who washed the dishes saw that there were no bubbles, they rejected the product en masse, despite the proof before their eyes that the product worked. As a result, the product was taken off the shelves and a new ingredient added to the mix, one that would produce the bubbles that people associated with cleanliness.
